Methamphetamine Addiction

Methamphetamine is an extremely dangerous and addictive stimulant. Statistics have shown that currently at least 1.5 million individuals are addicted to meth in the United States. The addictive nature of methamphetamines are related to the rush of dopamine produced by the drug. The flooding of dopamine produced by Meth is much higher than the natural amount of dopamine that is produced naturally, which hijacks our pleasure-reward systems, making it impossible to experience pleasure and reward without the substance. Repeated use leads to compulsive use behaviors leading to destructive consequences. People who use methamphetamine more than once are at increased risk to develop a physical and psychological dependence. Once addiction develops it is nearly impossible to quit without professional medical interventions.
